TOP TEN TUESDAY

TOP TEN TUESDAYS

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday! This is a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, where a new top ten list hits the web every week!

The topic this time out is: My Favorite Books I Don’t Dare Reread!

Have you ever had a book which you list among your favorites?  A story which kept you up at night reading, lingered in your memories, and never faded entirely away, but now, years later, you are terrified to reread this beloved book because you are scared what you will find?  Terrified the amazing story you once adored will now turn out to be a sad, boring morass of broken memories?

If you answered “Yes”, then this is a topic for you, because I’m going to list ten of my favorites which I really . . . REALLY can’t bring myself to read out of pure fear of ruining my deep love for them.

10. The Rulers of Hylor

This was a trilogy which I discovered early on in my reading days.  A fairly straightforward fantasy tale which caught my imagination and opened my eyes to the idea there was more to fantasy than just Tolkien.  Now, though, I am terrified to reread it because I’d rather recall it through the lost eyes of my former preteen self.

9. TimeWars

This time travel adventure tale was one of the first SFF series I ever recall reading.  I loved ever second of it.  After growing older, I realize it was a fairly generic story from Simon Hawke, but it still looms as a favorite in my mind due to my fondness for it in earlier years.

8. Tiger and Del

Jennifer Roberson was a favorite fantasy author of mine back in the 1980s and 1990s.  It started with her Cheysuli series and continued with this one.  Sure, I knew the adventures of Tiger and Del were a fantasy rom-com with an action adventure slant, but I loved them anyway. Not sure if I would now or not.

7. Gap

I honestly do not recall very much about Donaldson’s Gap series other than I convinced myself at the time that I liked it.  Why I thought I liked it, I have no idea now.  But I do know I really have very little interest in rereading it for some reason.

6. Dragonlance Chronicles

As an avid D&D player back in my teen years, this series was like a dream come true.  I loved it.  Couldn’t wait to get my hands on every Dragonlance book which was released.  I still hold it in high esteem, but I’m also terrified to reread it, worried I’ll be disappointed.

5. The Belgariad

This is one of my teen favorites.  I loved this series.  Adored the next one.  Was mesmerized by the prequel books.  It was my personal Harry Potter, if you will. I wouldn’t dare to reread it though, because while it has remained the same I’ve turned into a pessimistic, jaded middle-aged man.  Doubt we’d mesh well anymore.

4. The Histories of King Kelson

I grew up on Katherine Kurtz’s tales of the Deryni, especially enjoying the ones focusing in on young King Kelson.  Reading about this noble, devoted young man growing up and into his role as a ruler of a great nation was a wonderful way for me (a teenage boy growing into a man) to see how my struggles weren’t so different after all.

3. Riddle-Master

A classic fantasy story which was beautifully written, emotionally captivating, and filled with more than transparent meaning.  It really harkens back to a more optimistic way of viewing the world, and since I’m older I’m not sure if that would ruin my appreciation of this wonderful story, so I stay away.

2. The Instrumentalities of the Dark

I enjoyed this series, appreciated the historical similarities to 13th century Europe, and value it as another excellent work from one of my favorite authors.  But . . . I really think this is a series which can’t be reread.  The second time through I just don’t know if I would appreciate it as much.

theft-of-swords

1.  The Riyria Revelations

Now, I really enjoy Hadrian and Royce stories.  The two are truly a great team, and their funny banter and wild adventures always bring a smile to my face.  But — like Glen Cook’s Instrumentalities — I just don’t believe I’d enjoy reading this series again.  The jokes would be stale; the twists no longer surprising; and the fun factor mostly gone.  Hate to say that, but I really think Hadrian and Royce only work the first time around.  At least for me.

GUEST POST

guest-post2Today, I’m happy to have my son, Connor, return to the blog.  Usually when he shows up it is to talk about graphic novels, but today he is giving an update on his GoFundMe.  Anyone who has come by the blog this summer has probably noticed the big link on the sidebar.

borderHi, everyone. I won’t take up much of your time.  Dad just thought it would be a good idea to let everyone know what is going on with my GoFundMe.

First, I wanted to tell the people who were nice enough to contribute to my project that even though I didn’t raise enough money to buy a storage building,  I was able to use the money to buy several bookshelves.  So now the books are sorted and up off the floor. And as you can see I’ve used ever inch of space I could!

bookshelf

Just so you know, there is another bookshelf just outside the picture which is also full as well as a few boxes of books on the floor, but I have been able to clear most of the garage floor which has made it look much, much neater and made my mom A LOT happier.

As for my book company, I had my first $1000 sales month in July.  I didn’t get paid that much.  (I wish!!) But it was really, really cool to sell that many books and be able to save a couple hundred dollars for college.

Future plans are to keep buying books, getting organized, and (if things keep going well) start a business seller’s account on Amazon so I can have my own storefront there, which I’ll link up here if anyone is interested in buying some great books.  I have everything from cookbooks to Christian books to history books to SFF books to romance books.  So there is something for anyone!

Before I go I would like to thank all the awesome, caring people out there who have taken the time to read this!

batman-V-superman-logoAbout Connor (In his dad’s words):

Connor is a teenager who enjoys graphic novels (DC Comics are preferred!), superhero movies (Avengers Infinity War is his newest favorite.), watching YouTube videos day and night,  will happily accept any and all caps (because you just can’t have too many caps), and whose favorite music right now revolves around 80s hair metal and early 2000s pop-punk.  And, no, Connor did not have any input into my paragraph about him.  Being a dad does have it’s privileges.

FRIDAY FACE OFF AUGUST 10, 2018

friday-face-off

Welcome to the Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy. Join us every Friday as we pit cover against cover, and publisher against publisher, to find the best artwork in the literary universe.  If you want to join us next week, check out next week’s predetermined theme, choose a book, compare two or more different covers available for that book, then name your favorite. A list of future weeks’ themes are available at Lynn’s Book Blog

This week’s theme is:

“…Christine, who have torn off my mask and who therefore can never leave me again!”

– A cover with a mask!”

Anyone want to guess what my selection this week is going to feature?

I’ll give you a hint: A beautiful woman wearing a mask . . . because it’s intriguing!

AND THE WINNER IS . . .

THE BLACK DREAM2

Both covers are great images of beautiful women wearing a mask, but I tend not to be a huge fan of covers which resemble photographs, preferring instead painted covers.  For this reason (and this reason alone), I made my pick.

So, do you agree with my pick?  Disagree?  Love them all?  Hate them all?  Let us know!

TOP THREE THURSDAY

top3thursday

Welcome to Top Three Thursday! This is a weekly feature I’ve decided to host from this day forward.  A day where I can post a short list on different topics I’ve been thinking about.  The focus this time out is: WHY SHOULD I READ THESE!

Yes, you guessed it: a day where someone (maybe you!) can try to convince me to give certain fantasy books/series a try.  But I have to warn you it’s going to be tough to do.  The reason is I’m already leaning toward not reading them.

Wait though.  Don’t give up yet.  I just wanted to warn you to bring your best, give it your all, because there is still a shot at changing my mind.  Obviously, I found these books appealing enough to consider, so there is a small ember of interest which one of you could fan into a flame of desire!

timeless3. TIMELESS  by R.A. SALVATORE

It wasn’t too terribly long ago (October 2016) when the conclusion to The Legend of Drizzt hit shelves; Mr. Salvatore tying up most of the long running series plot threads and leaving our hero in a place of peace with a new life before him.  But now we have another Drizzt book. *SIGH* At this point, I can’t really care, because I’ve already said my goodbyes to this character and all my other favorites.  Can anyone convince me why I should feel excited about this release?

Purchase Timeless: A Drizzt Novel at Amazon

lady henterman's wardrobe2. MARADAINE by MARSHALL RYAN MARESCA

Mr. Maresca is a damn prolific writer with around 9 Maradaine novels already (or soon to be) in publication.  Obviously, there are loads of fans for his work, lovers of this world and the fantasy characters he has created.  Problem is that I can’t get very excited about diving into any of these stories.  I’ve read reviews of more than a few of them, tried to talk myself in giving one a go, but the descriptions always put me off.  I’m thinking I’m just not the target audience for this series, which is fine, but I decided I’d let you guys try to persuade me otherwise.

Purchase Lady Henterman’s Wardrobe at Amazon

Foundryside RD4 clean flat1.  FOUNDRYSIDE by ROBERT JACKSON BENNETT

Initially I was pretty excited for this novel: Mr. Bennett having delivered some solid stories with his The Divine Cities series.  Then I started reading the early reviews for this book,, and while those reviews were very positive they left me feeling a bit underwhelmed.  My main problem was that most reviewers talk about what a wonderful job the author did of scientifically explaining his magic system of scrying (i.e. the process of making an item believe it is something else).  While that sounds cool, the actual plot sounds like every other YA fantasy published this decade, which isn’t cool.  Tell me why I’m wrong.

Purchase Foundryside: A Novel (The Founders Trilogy) at Amazon

Okay, I’ve laid my proverbial cards out on the table, shown my hand, so now take a turn trying to convince me I’m wrong and should be excited about any or all of these three books/series.  I dare you!

WAITING ON WEDNESDAY: PORT OF SHADOWS

waiting-on-wednesday
Waiting on Wednesday is a meme I’ve participated in for years which lets readers share their excitement for books coming out soon, and this week the story I’m eagerly awaiting is . . .

The one person who was taken into The Lady’s Tower and returned unchanged has earned the special interest of the court of sorcerers known as The Ten Who Were Taken. Now, he and the company are being asked to seek the aid of their newest member, Mischievous Rain, to break a rebel army. However, Croaker doesn’t trust any of the Taken, especially not ones that look so much like The Lady and her sister…

TOXIC TUESDAY

Toxic Tuesdays

For those of us who reside in the USA, it goes without saying that we are bombarded with some damn serious toxicity every day.  TV.  Film. Music. Social media.  They all feature a lot of pissed off people who seriously want to Punch Nazis or Trebuchet SJWs.  And while I wish I could say SFF fandom has been immune from this plague, it hasn’t been.

From the Rabid Puppies to the WorldCon scandal to author’s calling their fans names on social media, we have had our own fair share of discord and drama running rampant for a while now.  Non-fandom issues permeating the once hallowed halls of fun entertainment, fragmenting the fans, turning what was once a place of acceptance into yet another place to fight over socio-political issues.

When I complain to friends that the toxicity in SFF is causing me to loose my interest in many of my favorite authors and favorite franchises, they always tell me to ignore it all, focus on the art not the artist.  And I admit that sounds like great advice.

There is only one problem with ignoring the vitrol constantly coming from everyone?  How can I do so when many of the new SFF offerings are basically depressing social commentaries I could just as easily find if I turned on CNN or Fox News.  (Both tv stations I refuse to watch for those who want to know.)

Yeah, yeah, I know SFF has always had its share of social commentary stories.  And I’m sure many authors have always had their difference of opinion with their fans over politic and social issues, but there was one major difference between the past and now: NO SOCIAL MEDIA.  Which was actually a damn good thing in hindsight.

The reason I say that is because too many people (SFF authors included) spend far too much time online, on social media in particular, screaming out their disagreement, frustration, hatred, and death wishes for different groups.  Not only is it souring many current readers, but it is running away new fans.

How can I assert this?  Well, other than the sales numbers which are fairly negative, I’d say it is because I have teenage children.

My kids are the tech suave generation; the one where social media is a normal part of their everyday life; and I’ve watched first hand as their adoration and respect for different creators have evaporated once they followed them on social media.  The vitrol their once favorite writers, artists, or actors constantly spew toward their race, their religion, their political leanings, or sexual orientation causing them to totally loose all respect for their former heroes.

It’s sad really.  Who would have ever thought that SFF would come to this?  A fandom which once embraced everyone no matter your geekiness, race, religion, sexual orientation, or political affiliation now has writers, artists, directors, publishers, actors, and many, many more professionals actively insulting, demonizing, and hating their own fan base on social media.

I mean, does anyone truly think it’s a good idea to tell your fans not to buy your book/watch your tv show or film because they might be a different race, religion, sexual orientation, political affiliation, or take a different position on a political issue?

Just so you know: If you answered “Yes, it is a good idea to act like an asshole to your fans“, then please understand you probably are part of the problem, not part of the solution, and so I’m worried nothing I type will change your mind — though I hope I’m wrong about that.

For those of you who answered “No, we need to find a way to stop this madness” I have a bit of common sense advice: LESS ACTIVISM, MORE LOVE.

Yes, we should treat everyone (even those we disagree with) in the fandom with respect and love.  Sure, we might not agree with them about this issue or that, but we do have one major thing in common: we love SFF fandom and do not want it to be destroyed.  And if the hatred doesn’t stop soon, I’m afraid it is going to seriously damage not only my personal love for SFF but its future.

If that sounds a bit naive, corny, or whatever, I’m sorry.  My religion teaches acceptance of responsibility, forgiveness, and to love your enemies.  Plus, I am old enough to recall when the hippies around my hometown would always tell me the answer to all the world’s problems could be found in a simple song.  And, yeah, I did believe them because they held up a peace sign at me instead of trying to punch me.

all you need is love

romulus buckle 1

Yeah, I’m cheating a little this week, comparing two book covers from an ongoing series, but I don’t really care, because I’m in charge of the meme on my page.  Right?  Plus, I can’t think of any steampunks that I’ve read (that is only a handful) which capture the feel of the genre better than these. Zeppelins and crazy contraptions just scream steampunk to me, and Romulus Buckle is all zeppelins all the time.

The focus this time out is: THREE SERIES I’M NEVER GOING TO TRY!

I’m going to go ahead and admit there are a lot more than three series out there I have no interest in.  Series like Harry Potter come to mind immediately.  But I don’t want to go back in time.  Nope, I want to keep this short list topical, focused on the current day, so my picks are books with some current buzz that I find horribly dull and have no interest in spending money to read.

spinning silver3. Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik

The latest novel from Novik has already garnered 3,644 ratings over at Goodreads with a 4.41 star rating.  The top reviewers gush that this book is “enchanting“, “mystical“, and “an instant classic.” So, obviously, I should desperately want to read it, but I don’t.  It doesn’t sound at all like something I’d be entertained by, but then again more and more fantasy novels really aren’t targeted to my demographic, so I’m not surprised.

Purchase Spinning Silver at Amazon.

age of war2. Age of War by Michael J. Sullivan

I was a fan of Michael J. Sullivan’s Riyria novels; the light-hearted “buddy” stories of Hadrian and Royce a nice change of pace from the dark, serious and epic nature of most fantasy series. The Legends of the First Empire hasn’t really been to my taste though.  This is mainly because, in my opinion, Sullivan’s writing style is best suited for fast-paced action and Whedonesque quips, and this series is suppose to be EPIC, and Sullivan doesn’t really do epic well for me personally.

Purchase Age of War: Book Three at Amazon.

empire of ashes1 . The Empire of Ashes by Anthony Ryan

Please forgive me when I say this, but I am so God awful tired of fantasy stories about dragons (called drakes in this series).  I know, I know that is sacrilegious for me to type, yet it is the truth.  I’m also growing bored with cyberpunk worlds, magic systems based on ingesting something (metal in Mistborn, gunpowder in Powder Mage), and world building of Malazan complexity. I’m burned out on all those elements, which is why I can’t bring myself to care about this series.

Purchase The Empire of Ashes (The Draconis Memoria) at Amazon.

Well, those are my three.  Agree?  Disagree?  Want to let us know which 3 books you aren’t excited about, please let us know!
