Welcome to the Friday Face-Off, a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy. Join us every Friday as we pit cover against cover, and publisher against publisher, to find the best artwork in the literary universe. If you want to join us next week, check out next week’s predetermined them, choose a book, compare two or more different covers available for that book, then name your favorite. A list of future weeks’ themes are available at Lynn’s Book Blog
This week’s theme is:
‘‘When she was a child, the witch locked her away in a tower that had neither doors nor stairs.” – a cover featuring a Tower
Finally! A topic which is tailor made for a fantasy reader like me. I mean, there are towers, towers everywhere in fantasy — even if the “Tower” is only in the title, baby. My pick this week being J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Two Towers!
AND THE WINNER IS . . .
Another tie. I probably like the cover on the left the best, but I also find the other two intriguing in their own ways.
So, do you agree with my picks? Disagree? Love them all? Hate them all? Let us know!
I like the cover with the gates and also the middle one – it looks quite calm at first compared to the other covers, with the country setting, until your eye is drawn further to the looming black clouds in the background.

The one with the red circle was always more eye-catching online than in person. Not sure why.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Many, many more. 🙂

Good choice! Is that Edoras in the middle cover? Not usually one of the towers mentioned.

I took it to be Edoras. Definitely not a tower cover, but one I really liked.

I love the cover on the left of your three faves, it’s definitely got that “epic” vibe going on😁

I picked the same book today! There are so many covers its ridiculous. We pictured only a couple of the same covers haha. I really like the 4th cover (far right of your favs). I didn’t come accross that one while making my post and it might be my favorite overall!

The middle cover of course! How could I not vote for a work of the amazing Alan Lee? 🙂

Wow, that’s a lot to choose from. From your 3-way tie, I’m going to have to go with the middle one, because if I’m not mistaken, that’s Weathertop? How can I not vote for that?

I had never seen that one on the bottom row with the big black tower and Gandalf standing in white. That’s an interesting interpretation and really has an old school fantasy art vibe.

Great choice and what a great selection of covers too! I agree with your first choice (cover on the left) my eye went straight to that one – it is very detailed and dramatic.

Wow! What a great selection of covers 😀 I love the Orthanc cover for its beautiful artwork, the first on the second row for its simplicity, and the Edoras cover for those nostalgic feelings it gives me… the winner though… definitely Orthanc! 😀
