TOP TEN TUESDAY

TOP TEN TUESDAYS

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday! This is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where a new top ten list hits the web every week!

This week our topic is …

TOP TEN FAVORITE BOOK COVERS FROM 2017

This post is all about fantasy covers.  2017 covers, specifically.  At least, the ones I’ve seen.  And, more importantly, the ones which immediately captured my attention and made me want to read the book.

Please understand I am not an art critic, nor do I pretend to be one.  This list is all about the covers which I saw and though “Damn, I have got to read that book!”  So I’m not going to explain why I liked certain covers more than others.  Honestly, I don’t know why I preferred one over another, but I did, so I’m going to list them from 10 to 1, not through any scientific method but purely upon my current mood.  So if you disagree, please feel free to sue me.  (Joking, of course.)

10. AGE OF SWORDS

9. WITH BLOOD UPON THE SAND

  1. I liked The Age of Swords best from your list. But that maybe because I’m a bit obsessed with ships at the moment. Cool list!

  2. Have to say ‘With Blood Upon the Sand’ is my favorite out of this group. Not the brightest one, but there’s an eye-catching mystical look to it. Makes me think of Prince of Persia too.

  3. The Dinosaur Princess? Where do I get this please? 😀

River of Teeth and Evil is a matter of Perspective from your list. I am not a fan of The Core or Sanderson’s cover. I actually kind of feel Sanderson gets the short straw on many of his covers but it may be a throwback vibe they are going for

  5. My vote goes to With Blood Upon the Sand: amazing cover for a great story 🙂

  6. The image used for the cover of Evil Is A Matter Of Perspective is excellent. I’m not sure about all that text though; it ruins it somewhat.

  7. I liked the cover of my 2017 book best (The Shadow Reaper!) Alas, it is a blend of genres, so it doesn’t really fit your criteria, I guess – not to mention it hasn’t been released yet, heh.
Sorry. Just being silly. Okay, let’s see . . . Of those on your list, the top 3 were my top 3, though I really liked the lighting and mood in River of Teeth! I’d put that in the #2 slot, if it were me. I liked them all for the most part–The Core, least of all. Color-wise, it’s pretty striking, so I can see why it was on your list, but I like paintings that tell more and have more going on than showing a character.)

    • Cover design is actually quite complicated, as most people initially see it very small online. It’s a different story at a book store. Amazon is very popular, so book covers have to be designed to work well really tiny (since you have to catch their interest enough to get them to enlarge it), which is why the composition, color, font choice, etc. is so crucial. What looks great big can be a muddied mess down small (hence so many book covers that focus on a close up of a person, with large text).

All good choices! The Age of Swords really gives a sense of full worldbuilding that I can’t resist, although it didn’t pop out at me at first.

  9. Reblogged this on Archer's Aim and commented:
This is a vivid compilation of fantasy covers. I can’t disagree, they all belong on the list.

  10. I see a few Richard Anderson covers on this list. The guy’s a genius! Age of Swords and With Upon the Sand are also gorgeous, but I think I still prefer the covers to their first books more!

Hi! Hopped over from P.H. Solomon’s blog. I love The Age of Swords from your list. That one would definitely make me take a closer look.
